@raimundobruno he's coming from a place of ignorance, not malice. he's got plenty of room to grow, if he chooses to do so upon becoming informed. whether that's good for our main characters right now or not, however, is another matter entirely. they have their own shit to sort out, they aren't obligated to teach the new guy everything. especially in a society that, as far as I know, isn't really familiar with trans folks at large, or largely treat them as an oddity at best, he's a couple rungs up from your average judgemental type.
