Yeah the composition is aimed at these 'special guests', but he and the rest of the orchestra clearly were not satisfied with the piece they're expected to perform. So maybe he's trying to get her opinion as a sort of seeking affirmation of their opinions, since clearly the band members like him more than the old one enough to suggest playing his piece instead.

It's like when someone is eating something that make you cringe, you might look around to see if anyone else is with you on this or are you actually the weird one for not liking that thing.

I'm not disagreeing that he should question her on her comment, but just pointing out that to him, she isn't a musician.
