So Ujou's mother is probably this thorny because of the circumstances that led to the death of Chouko's mother. Judging from her words and the context of the chapter, she probably saw her as a friend before a master or employer, and so she's all the harder on herself for whatever lapse of judgement allowed her life to be lost. It seems likely she's so bitter and poisonous to her son because maybe the trouble he and Chouko got into when they first met was related to that, or because she already knew he's motivated to be Chouko's aide by intimate feelings and sees that as unallowable callousness. It's contradictory but understandable, since her entire attitude to the matter seems to be based on personal motives and attachments too. Curious to get more of a full picture of it, but this chapter actually implied a lot. Not sure what to make of how even Chouko felt she was dangerous - she doesn't seem to hold any actual *animosity* towards her. Ujou's family is kinda messed up though, as we've already seen, but the way his mother scorns him seems more deliberate. |
