I honestly think that I would have preferred it if Bai Yi didn't awaken... Something about how he can be strong DESPITE not having powers and DESPITE the devil's enticement to kill.

Here's my issue. We're only in chapter 8, sure, but there has never been a single hint that a sacrifice could cause a person to awaken. It was very clearly just a case of "kill some random amount of people" or "inherit it from your parents". Those were the two very clearly established methods of getting powers. That makes this look a bit like an ass pull. By no means it is an unforgivable ass pull; again, this is only chapter 8, so things can be introduced afresh just fine, but it is an ass pull nonetheless.

Similarly with allen's theory on the devil and illogical nature of this world. Sure, it's very possible that the devil could be bewitching people into being...stupid. I'm just going to straight up call them stupid. Even if allen is right, though, there's very little/no foreshadowing to suggest that, so it makes the story seem shallow. Let's say it's completely true and it gets revealed next chapter with the doctor's dying words. That just means we went through 8 chapters where people were acting frustratingly stupid without us, as readers, knowing anything about why. It's still frustrating.
