@Wolvenworks balance wise it's just from a center of gravity point. otherwise your humanoid character couldn't manipulate their posture as easily.

@Granitefish why is the hip better than say the shoulder blades/on the back?

@romboids the hip region is actually the better balance placement location for wings on a humanoid. While not the most common location it is a normal location for manga characters.
