I expected some to rebel but then again, they are up against Thors.

Will they go to Byzantium? Or they will use some Jomsborg money to go to Vinland?

Well i guess we will go full merchant saga now.

That's what you get for forcing someone who doesn't want to be chief to be chief lol losers

I say ass-backwards because he's spitting in the face of what they value.
1. He is freshly declared their leader by birthright and unproven.
2. He denies them their post-battle executions. If I'm a hungry warmonger, I expect to see my enemies ceremoniously executed. Instead, he provides them transportation, funding, and armed escort.
3. He forsakes Jomsborg. Jomsborg is a major fort of the Jomsvikings. He announces they will strip it and bury it to the ground. Weapons will be buried, slaves will be released and given funds. Sounds like Thorfinn hates fighting, slavery and is unfit to be their leader.
4. Thorkell claims that he has the authority to settle the Jomsvikings' dispute by order of Canute. He then says that he's relinquishing his authority to Thorfinn. Honestly, it sounds like a sleazy bluff to declare Thorfinn as legitimate.
5. Probably the hugest problem here, he disbands the Jomsvikings. He's denying them their very livelihood seconds after being declared their leader.
All of this adds up to reasons to resent Thorfinn. Although you say they value loyalty, I disagree. From how they have been depicted in the story thus far, they value battle. And Thorfinn has done everything possible to deny them that lifestyle.

Can't wait to see what's next in this story, very interested.

Beautiful turn of events, although, I did not expect much different from the current Thorfinn. Looking forward to the next arc!

All the people complaining about Thorfinn not being a bloodthirsty marauder anymore should really go read another manga. I for one, appreciate Thorfinn's character development and new sense of morality. There's still plenty of blood being spilled by people outside of Thorfinn and his party and that's not likely to change anytime soon. It'll be interesting, if sad, to see when things fall apart for Thorfinn and his crew. This is a historical manga, and Vinland was historically short-lived.

Nice, they will get to the narwhal tusk scamming at byzantine .
Avatar
cry all you like, i like the approach of this very much.. and also all the "small details" they get right story wise while not losing the somewhat silly moments... thats gold..
Avatar
Now to continue Thorfinn's mission to gain enough money to fund the Vinland colonization.

I laughed how Thorkill showed 2 fingers to Thorfinn when he asked for the second favour.

@Nes370: The Jomvikings were not just vikings, they were soldiers. They were famed for their discipline. They will follow orders.
How were his orders "ass-backwards"? He did not want to be chief. He gave everyone the option to leave on very good terms and if they wished to even offered them continued employment with his liege. Beats the hell out of "letting it all go down in flames" if you ask me.

@boldmonkey: Which is why he gave them the option to join Canutes army.

I lovereading all the butthurt in the comments.

The Jomsvikings were already in a decline in the 10th century and ceased to exist in the first half of the 11th century.

Also, lol at people claiming that adult Thorfinn lacks purpose or a drive. Are you even paying attention?
Avatar
Baldr, you adorable little rascal. Yes, let's go fishing.

@Nes370
But in real life Jomsborg and the Jomsvikings really did vanish from history around Canute's time.
Yukimura's using actual historical people and organizations, so he has to a least somewhat fit the records.
Avatar
damn i forgot about Canute. I wonder what sort of badass he's become from the pussy ass bitch he once was.
Avatar
lol bunch of idiots in these comments who are like "b-b-b-but VIKINGS!!!", thorfinn as said by another commenter didn't want to be leader and was forced into the position, so they reap what they have sown. He gave the jomsvikings options like joining the military proper, or simply returning home, with some severance pay plus any loot they could take with them. That's a pretty generous offer to be honest.
Avatar
@unholyfiretruck you might have missed it since it only took up like 5 pages of the chapter, but it is outright stated that these are orders sanctioned by King Canute himself, as thorkell is the leader set by him, and Thorfinn the accepted leader by the jomsvikings . To defy his orders, no matter how displeased they may be by them, would be traitorous and they would be hunted down and executed to a man.
Avatar
The end of the Jomsvikings felt really disjointed. I hope the author chooses to use the resentment created here as fuel for a future arc, because as a viking that would be totally retarded to just accept Thorfinn's ass-backward orders.
