I know this chapter is kinda old but this part of the web novel adaptation was done really badly, in the novel it was explained better. Pretty much all of the explanations were left out because it is basically impossible to draw. It's more epic in the novel. Basically what happened was that he's using pure technique to fight someone on a much higher cultivation level and he is in fact losing, but rather than a power up through (I dunno, belief) he basically acts subconsciously and just throws a punch at the guy, which (later is revealed to be some innate ability) breaks the barrier set down and ends up disrupting the spell.

All in all, I think it was a bad adaptation of this scene.

Well, that sure was a roundabout way to create the "plot"... let the cocky MC be cocky and provoke everyone... oh wait, he just beat somebody strong somehow... let's not mess with him...
