Nishikata is simply suffering from a chronic PTSD. It's perhaps quite pitiful in his case because normally you'd talk about it concerning war veterans, victims terrorism, or major accidents/catastrophes, but people react differently to different things. Nishikata has been bullied for years endlessly. The stress and doubts accumulated day after day, until he broke mentally. He might have got healed if he rejected Takagi and married a normal woman, or even lived alone, but he ended up with Takagi, and the rest is tragic history.

I don't think readers are frustrated because they don't get to see the parents making out on top of Chi. Readers are frustrated because:
1) Nishikata doesn't seem any more confident in Takagi's feelings than he was in middle school, and
2) Nishikata's a moron.
I want to see them grow up some, even if it has nothing to do with plot twists. I want to see Nishikata mature into a wily and confident man who's almost impossible to fool because he's been trained by the best, and yet Takagi still beats him every time because sheis the best.

Instead, Nishikata has regressed from "dumb, by middle-school standards" to "dumb, by kindergarten standards." Sad. Sad! Sad. *combs hair implants back into place*

What does is the downgrade of art and design that this particular mangaka has. Adult Takagi from the main manga is way better looking and designed, it's crazy.
